It’s December! And that means its the holiday season, which means it’s time to think about two activities: #1 Cooking. #2 Buying Things. Whether it’s shopping for electronic things, or toy things, or kitchen things (now you’re speakin’ my language!), this time of year is definitely characterized by buying “things”. So I am killing two birds with one stone (have you figured out yet that I’m into efficiency) by giving you a list of the best things to buy when it comes to cooking! Whether you’re looking for gifts to buy others or new tools to add to your kitchen, here are my top kitchen gifts for the home cook who has everything.
I still can’t get over how amazing of an idea this is, and how I didn’t think of it myself! Whenever I’m making batches of chocolate chip cookies or pumpkin muffins, I’m always running around the kitchen looking for spare counter space to cool the baking sheets. Sound familiar? Then this is exactly what you (or the person you are shopping for) needs.
Another completely genius idea– measuring cups with additional sizes! Besides the typical measurements that everybody has, this set includes measuring cups that are 1 1/2 cups, 1 3/4 cups, and 2 cups. This might not sound like a big deal to you if you don’t spend a lot of time in the kitchen, but trust me. It is. Your home cook friend will love you for these. Such an amazing time saver!
Hands down my favorite kitchen utensil. Because it’s simply the best! This is my go-to knife that I am constantly using to chop onions, garlic, vegetables, fresh herbs, etc. One of these days I should count how many times it gets used in a week.
And speaking of knives, I can’t imagine not owning a good knife sharpener. I could go on and on about the importance of sharp knives (and how much more you will enjoy using your knives), but I’ll keep it simple and just tell you that a knife sharpener is the perfect gift.
This one has no added utility or practically or anything sensible like that. I just really like rinsing fresh vegetables and fruits in a hot pink colander. Makes me feel alive.
My kitchen wouldn’t be complete without a dutch oven. It can be used for almost any stove top recipe, and the most amazing part is that it can go in the oven! That’s right. You can sear meat on the stove and then finish it in the oven seamlessly. Dutch ovens have a reputation for being expensive, and many of them out there are quite pricey. I’ve found this one to be super sturdy and amazing, and not super expensive!
And for another thing my kitchen wouldn’t be complete without– my ThermoWorks thermometer! I don’t understand how people cook without it. This is the key to perfectly juicy chicken breasts, perfectly cooked roasts… you can even take the temperature of homemade bread to know exactly when to take it out of the oven. It is a bit pricey, but totally worth the investment in my opinion. This is my biggest secret to delicious, succulent meats.
If you are a coffee lover (or shopping for one), a french press is a must-buy. It makes an absolutely perfect cup of coffee. So you might as well jump on the french press bandwagon because they are popular for a reason. This one makes a single serving and is what I use, but Bodum also makes larger sizes. When it comes to french presses, don’t even think about getting any brand besides Bodum.
I love these! Serving anything in individual portions is always so cute. Perfect for miniature deep-dish cookies, brownies, pizzas, casseroles, or anything else you can think of! The link above is for a set of 4 mini skillets, but I would recommend purchasing a set of least 8.
And for the grand finale, my latest and definitely greatest kitchen gadget– the new KitchenAid Spiralizer attachment! Wow is this tool great. It’s perfect for creating zoodles, and it also peels, cores, and chops apples in one fell swoop! It saved me so much time this past weekend when I made a huge batch of homemade applesauce (recipe coming soon!).
Happy cooking and shopping!
